Diet counseling
A healthy diet is good for everyone. But, if you are at high risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes, it is especially important.
Eating healthy means following a healthy eating pattern that includes a variety of nutritious foods and drinks. It also means getting the number of calories that’s right for you (not eating too much or too little).
Who is at risk
Those at risk include people that are overweight and at high risk for diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
What you can do
- Balance the food you eat with your activity.
- Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all.
- Limit foods high in salt, saturated fat, trans fat, and added sugar.
Preventive service at no cost
Assessment of and counseling for a patient that is obese or overweight with at least one additional cardiovascular risk factor (e.g., hyperlipidemia, hypertension, etc.).
Adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors |
The USPSTF recommends offering or referring adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors to behavioral counseling interventions to promote a healthy diet and physical activity. |
Why screening and counseling are important
Understanding how to eat based on your personal risk factors may help prevent certain diseases.
What the screening and counseling are
Your doctor may ask you questions about your eating habits – what you eat, when you eat, etc. Based on your answers, your doctor may recommend changes with the goal of improving your eating habits long-term.
Additional tips
- Any diet you choose with your doctor should be balanced with fruits, vegetables, lean meats or proteins, and whole grains.
- Keep a positive outlook.
- Make realistic goals.
